Discernment in Action: How to See People with God’s Eyes
Jun 24, 2025Discernment isn’t about uncovering what’s wrong with people. It’s about seeing what God sees and loving them into truth, freedom, and healing.
Jesus didn’t walk around diagnosing everyone’s issues. He walked in perfect love, perfect truth, and perfect discernment. He knew when to speak, when to stay silent, when to pray, and when to act.
And the good news? That same Spirit lives in you.
What Does Discernment in Action Look Like?
1. You See Deeper
Discernment sees past the surface. You may notice that a child acting out in rebellion is actually carrying a spirit of rejection. Or that a co-worker constantly sowing division is being influenced by fear, not malice.
This doesn’t make you superior. It makes you responsible, to pray, love, and support.
2. You Pray Strategically
When you discern the root, your prayers change. You're no longer saying, “Lord, help them be nicer.” You're saying, “In Jesus' name, I speak healing over their wound. I come against the spirit of fear. I declare peace.”
It becomes surgical prayer.
3. You Stay Rooted in Love
Love is the lens. Discernment without love leads to pride.
Discernment with love leads to freedom.
You don’t use what you see to condemn, you use it to intercede.
“Speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ…” – Ephesians 4:15
4. You Become a Doorway for the Holy Spirit
As Rob teaches, we are “matrices”, gateways. Either the Holy Spirit flows through us, or some other spirit does.
Discernment helps you keep the channel clear, so only love, joy, peace, and truth flow through.
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
5. You Help Set People Free
Discernment leads to action. Not gossip, not frustration, but freedom.
If someone is bound in sin, fear, offense, or addiction, you now know how to pray and what to speak.
You might be the only one who sees it. That makes you the first responder in the Spirit.
Practical Ways to Grow in Discernment that Heals
-
Ask God to show you one person this week who needs encouragement.
Then ask Him, “What do You see in them?” Speak that truth out in love. -
Pray for boldness to respond when God reveals something.
Don’t just discern—respond with prayer, action, or encouragement. -
Fast and pray for clarity.
Even a short fast can sharpen your spiritual awareness. -
Write down what you’re sensing, and ask a leader or mentor for feedback.
Test everything. And stay humble.
Discernment Builds the Church
This gift is given not to puff us up, but to build others up.
It strengthens the Church. It protects unity. It leads people to Jesus.
Let’s be a people who see, not to expose, but to love, heal, and redeem.
Reflection Questions:
-
Am I using discernment to love people, or just to feel more spiritual?
-
How am I responding to what I sense?
-
Who can I talk to this week about something God has shown me?
