Transformation through hearing God
Mar 31, 2026Hearing God: Essential to Our Walk with Him
There is a difference between religion and relationship.
Jesus Christ did not die only so that we could go to heaven. He died so that we could be restored into relationship with Him. And at the heart of every relationship is one key element: communication.
When we lean more toward religion than relationship, we may begin to believe that God only speaks to a select few—pastors, leaders, or “spiritual” people—and not to us personally. But Scripture makes it clear: God speaks, and He desires to speak to His people.
In the Old Testament, God spoke through prophets. In the New Testament, we see that Jesus Himself spoke only what the Father gave Him to say. For Him to walk in perfect obedience, He had to continually hear the Father’s voice.
In Gospel of John 12:49–50, Jesus says:
“For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.”
Again in John 8:28:
“I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.”
Jesus is our example. If He lived in constant dependence on hearing the Father, how much more do we need to incline our ears to hear Him? Hearing God leads us into obedience—and obedience leads us into action and transformation.
Overcoming the Obstacle of Doubt
One of the greatest obstacles we face is doubt.
We doubt that God still speaks.
We doubt that He speaks to us.
We doubt our ability to recognize His voice.
At times, we may be confident that we have heard Him—but more often, we hesitate. We question. And too often, we do nothing.
Yet Jesus reminds us in John 10:27:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
This is not a promise for a select few. It is the inheritance of every believer.
A Relationship That Cost Everything
We celebrate that Jesus went to the cross on our behalf so that we could live—not just eternally, but in daily relationship with Him.
Hearing His voice is not a bonus feature of Christianity—it is central to our walk. It is part of what He paid for.
As it says in Book of Jeremiah 33:3:
“Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
And in Book of James 1:5:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.”
We are invited into an ongoing, living conversation with our Father.
A Call to Respond
As we step into the Easter season and reflect on what it means in our lives, take a moment to challenge yourself:
- When last did I hear God speak to me?
- Am I growing in my ability to recognize His voice?
- Or have I allowed doubt to keep me from stepping out in faith?
If you find yourself unsure, don’t stay there. Decide to grow.
Align yourself with training. Connect with people who hear God and are willing to walk alongside you. Allow yourself to be discipled—from doubt into faith, from uncertainty into confidence.
As we’ve shared in previous newsletters, discipleship is not just about gaining knowledge—it’s about transformation. And part of that transformation is learning to hear the voice of God for yourself.
“The Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing” (John 5:19).
If Jesus lived this way, so should we.
